Alberta 55 plus organized High River's first free seniors' fun day at George Lane Park on July 12. A total of 50 or more people showed up to the event, which ran from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The organizers of the event: President of Zone 2 of Alberta 55 Plus, Norma Dawson and Secretary for the High River and District Seniors' Friendship Center, Cheryl Kendall, encouraged people to come and fun at the event.
The senior's fun day featured BBQ lunch with hot dogs, chips, coleslaw, and water which was by donation. The money donated, a total of $316 raised, will go to the High River Hospital of Auxiliary.
The games you could participate in were, Corn Hole (Bean bag toss), Bocce, and Horseshoes. You can also come out every Mondays for Horseshoes, every Wednesdays for Bocce, and Fridays for Corn Hole to enjoy yourself by just paying $15 membership fee a year.
For those who don't know, Horseshoe is a pit. You throw a horseshoe and try getting it around the steak at the other end. You get points for it. Bocce is where you throw a white ball (also called jack) and then you throw other balls, roll them, and try getting close to the jack. That is how you score for Bocce. Corn Hole is just like beanbag toss.
A lot of the people taking part had mixed feelings. Some being nervous, some excited, some energetic and some of them seemed to be lost.
All these fun activities initiates to bring all the senior citizens together in the community.
"The best part is the socializing, because we've got people from Cochrane, Canmore, Starthmore, Red Deer, Calgary, Okotoks, and then of course High River," said Dawson.
