Journalism vs AI: Will human reporters be competing with robots in the future?
The future of journalism seems to be at crossroads as AI is seeping into newsrooms. Artificial Intelligence is becoming and indispensable tool for journalists, empowering them, and providing both, opportunities, and challenges. AI remains a subject to be scrutinised in the society.
The use of AI in journalism promises greater efficiency, effectiveness, and speed in delivering news to public. The prevalence of AI leads to journalists and media organizations doubting their own skills and integrity. It poses ethical challenges as it gets difficult drawing insights from experts and professionals.
The Impact of AI raises important ethical questions. The use of Artificial intelligence poses a high risk of misinformation and loss of human oversight.
According to Lisa Gibbs, the director of news partnerships for the A.P, “The work of journalism is creative, it’s about curiosity, it’s about storytelling, it’s about digging and holding governments accountable, it’s critical thinking, it’s judgement- and that is where we want our journalists spending their energy.”
AI generated articles tend to be biased toward specific viewpoints and demographics. It also raises questions if AI can be programmed to maintain neutrality. Whereas media organizations and journalists take diverse approach towards their topics so that they aren’t biased.
Jenn Crider, a Google spokeswoman said, “AI tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role of journalists have in reporting, creating and fact-checking their articles.” Instead, it would be helpful as AI would provide options for headlines and other news writing styles.
Artificial intelligence continues to grow in the world of journalism and media organizations strive to maintain a delicate balance between unbiased reporting and embracing technological advancements.
